About Me

Armando Rangel Colina - Economist

I am an applied economist who specializes in econometrics and modeling consumer behavior. My fields of interest are industrial organization and applied econometrics. My main passion is to translate data into meaningful impact evaluation metrics. I use cutting-edge structural modeling, spatial modeling, and causal inference. I am particularly interested in studying market competition and welfare outcomes across individuals with different demographic characteristics.

Research

My research uses causal inference tools and structural modeling to extract insights from data and measure the impact of policies. I have worked on various projects, ranging from estimating optimal interventions in food fortification programs across African countries to evaluating the effect of financial index fund availability on farmers’ premiums to hedge their crops.

However, most of my work lies in the nexus of energy markets and competition.  I study how different aspects of competition, such as price and location, affect market outcomes such as consumer welfare, environmental impacts, product branding, etc.

Teaching

I have extensive experience teaching graduate and undergraduate-level courses in economics, with a particular focus on industrial organization, finance, and econometrics.

  • As a lead lecturer for a B.Sc. Options and Futures market course, I built the syllabus from scratch to balance the practitioner’s needs and academic rigor.
  • I have also worked as a teaching assistant in several undergraduate and graduate-level courses, where I helped students understand complex economic concepts and develop their critical thinking skills.
  • My teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning, critical thinking, and real-world applications of economic theory. I strive to create an inclusive learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and encourages students to reach their full potential.

Outreach

As an economist, I am committed to using my expertise to impact society positively. I am passionate about leveling the playing field for immigrants and first-generation college students.

  • I am a certified UndocuAlly educator. As such, I have taken courses to understand the situation of undocumented students and how to serve them better.
  • I have also participated in The UC Davis “First-gen peer mentoring program” as a mentor. In this program, we are matched with other first-generation college students doing graduate degrees to mentor them through the hidden curriculum in academia.
